The idea is to capture a peaceful moment in a person’s life. The painting is not quite what you might describe as typically nocturnal, and that is deliberate. In the middle of the summer, a Scandinavian night does not get darker than the onset of dusk elsewhere in the world.

The buildings in the background, you can find at the harbour or water front of Vejle city, Denmark. They are blocks of flats, and they are popularly known as ‘the wave’. The fjord is characteristic for its very calm surface waters and the fact that it is surrounded by low forested hills shaped by glaciers during the last ice age.
