2F (Averted Gaze) is a painting of woman by sea inlet. Actually a woman seeking nature to sooth her, which, I guess, is a very nordic response to rumination, stress, melancholy or just recalibrating for a minute before going happily back to the every day chores.
She is looking out over the calm water, it has ripples but no real waves crashing in on the shore. The place is Tirsbæk Beach by the Vejle Fjord in Denmark. It might look cold and deserted at this particular moment. Yet, Tirsbæk is one of those places where people go bathing all year round. Even when it is icy.
The woman is actually my wife Helene, who has been a model or stand in on several paintings. As it happens, she received some bad news on the day. Consequently, she suggested that we, as a family, went out to get some ‘Vitamin Sea’, and I felt compelled to capture the beauty of the moment and planned this painting. Tirsbæk is about 6 miles away and has become one of the places by the fjord that our family has grown most fond of. According to Bo Bartlett the magic is right at your doorstep at times. He spent some time with Andrew Wyeth who always painted his backyard and the people in his neighbourhood. Of course, theirs no direct comparison between any of as as artists and quality of output, but there is some truth in the idea that ‘magic is right at your doorstep”.
