1E (At the Beach) is a straight-forward painting of a woman on a solitary walk by the sea on a grey weather day. The location is As Vig Beach in Juelsminde, Denmark. The woman is leaning slightly on left leg. She wears no make up. Her hairstyle is just a 3-seconds pony tail, and she has a slightly vacant look on her face as if the walk is part of her morning wake-up routine.

On the jumper you might notice runes from the Futhark or Viking alphabet. Z algiz “elk” (or “protection, defence”) and T tīwaz (The god Tiwaz).

As is the idea with the series of works called ‘Nord’, this painting records the mood, atmosphere and light of the nordic countries. A walk by the water is calming and soothing to many people — and their dogs, for that matter.

In Denmark where this painting is from, everyone lives very close to the sea. In fact, it is impossible to be further away from ‘Vitamin Sea’ than 52 kilometers (32.3 miles).

But it could just as well be one of the other nordic countries. For instance, no matter where you go on the Faroe Islands, the Atlantic Ocean is always near. The Faroe Islands has 1298 km (807 miles) of coastline, and the farthest away from the ocean one can get is 5 km (3 miles).

The populations of Greenland and Iceland mostly live a stone-throw from the sea. The distances in Norway and Sweden can be longer, though both countries have very long coastlines; and Stockholm the Capital of Sweden is an archipelago. Finally, Finland has good access to the Baltic Sea and the benefit of 188000 lakes.
